Mind Flayer Houdini Tutorial
DESCRIPTION
This download contains a video tutorial and a Houdini project with hundreds of written comments, notes and explanations for a destruction scene inspired by Stranger Things, where a monster crashes through the ceiling of a mall.
The video tutorial guides you through the scene file, explaining how every part of the animation was made.
The monster is created using mostly procedural methods, and you will find out step by step how you can shape Houdini's built-in test geometry, "Tommy", into a highly detailed mind flayer.
The creature is rigged and animated using KineFX, and secondary animation is generated using a Vellum simulation.
Finally, we rig and simulate the mall environment. You'll see how we set up constraints to destroy the glass and concrete ceiling in a realistic manner, adding dust, small debris, more Vellum effects and flickering lights to turn the shot into a visually enticing action scene.

The project is set up for rendering with Redshift. Since the tutorial is focused on modeling, rigging, animation and simulation you'll be able to follow along and work with the project file perfectly fine without Redshift. However, to study the materials and lighting you will need Redshift.
Please note that this project and tutorial are not suitable for Houdini beginners.
